  • Decorative Solar Lights - suitable for garden or home design features
  • Outdoor Solar Lights - most popular section of store featuring outdoor solar lighting systems such as garden lights, patio lighting, path lights and deck lights.
  • Solar Flood Lights - providing providing directed highlight lighting
  • Solar Security Lights - motion detector lights, perhaps the brightest form of solar lighting
  • Solar Batteries - replacement rechargeable batteries for solar lights

What are solar lights? A solar light typically includes three main components: the solar panel, the rechargeable battery, and the light bulb or light source, which typically is made up of one or more LED lights. The brightness often depends on the number of LEDs in the solar lighting solution. Generally speaking, the more LEDs, the brighter the light. Lights with 1-3 LEDs might only be suitable for accent lighting, which provides an attractive glow for accenting a path edge, but not enough light, for example to read much. Brighter lights, like flood lights might have 32 LEDs or more, like 80 for relatively brighter versions.

Of the light fixture parts, the most obvious and the one that distinguishes solar lights from conventional lights is the panel, which is the energy source. When the sun shines during the day, the sunshine strikes the solar panel causing the light to be converted into electricity. Typically the panel has photovoltaics that work the magic and create electrical current. The panel size depends on the amount of electrical current required by the solar lights. The more electricity needed, the larger the panel.

The electricity generated in the on board solar panel can directly power the light bulb if desired, but more typically is used to charge up another of the parts of the solar lights: the battery unit. The battery unit includes one or more rechargeable batteries, so during the day, when the sun is shining, it stores up the electrical current coming out of the solar panel – which is like a little a solar electric generator. Then, at night, the rechargeable battery is available to supply electrical current to the light bulb. As the light source is working, the battery is draining. So the number of hours of lighting provided depends on the capacity of the solar batteries, and the amount of electricity generated by the solar panel during daylight hours - which depends on number of hours of sunshine (time of year, length of day, shade), the size of the solar panel, weather conditions, and the latitude location, dust on the panel etc.

Installation Tips: To increase the hours of lighting, try positioning your solar lights or the solar panel in a sunny area, and try cleaning the panel to remove dust or dirt that may be blocking sunlight.

In solar lights, the light source typically is an LED light, or an array of LED lights. The technology for LED lights has improved greatly in recent years to the point that now LED lights can be used to provide focused and very bright light beams, such as for use in LED flashlights and in LED floodlights. Why this type of light source? Typically LEDs use less electrical current than other types of lights.

Design Tip: Accent lighting - A lot of outdoor solar lights, such as used for garden, patio, driveway or landscape lighting are solar accent lights. Accent lights are a distinct type of solar lights because their purpose is not necessarily brightness, but accent lighting. These are well suited as solar lights since not much electricity is required. So, a small solar photovoltaic panel can be used – typically right on board.

Many varieties, styles and colors of solar lights are available. Take your time browsing around the thousands of selections in our solar store and find the great color and style for your outdoor or indoor lighting needs.
